News and Information

FALL BREAK - NO SCHOOL TOMORROW
  • We will be having a canned food drive next week to help those in our community that are in need.  You can send in items any day next week if you are able to help.
  • Next week is our Fall Book Fair this is a great time to get new books your child may be interested in reading. Our class will visit the book fair on Thursday or you can shop with your child after school on Monday or Tuesday.  If you send money in for your child to spend, please put it in a bag or envelope with their name and label it “Book Fair”.
  • READING CHALLENGE- The students enjoyed the read a thon and we will be starting our 2nd quarter reading challenge soon!
  • Be sure to save your BOX TOPS and send them to school with your child.  Parent Teacher Conferences are Monday and Wednesday, October 16th-18th.
  • Field Trip to the Pumpkin Patch on October 25th! Please return permission slips and $5 to school by Wednesday, October 18th.
Language Workshop
We started a very magical unit this week on fairy tales. We have been talking about story elements in our stories. We also learned that a pronoun takes the place of a noun.
Math Workshop
This week we continued our module on Sums and Differences to 10. We focused on doubles and doubles plus one facts.  We have learned several strategies to help us add numbers.
Writing Workshop
This week we started our opinion writing. The students are defending their opinion on whether or not first graders should have a bedtime. They have to state their opinion and give 2 reasons why.
Word Study
We are spending this time working on knowing the difference between short vowels and long vowels in a word.  
Next Week
Next week we will continue our fairy tale unit with different versions of Cinderella. We will also continue the writing process by publishing and start a new opinion piece.

Lost and Found

Is your child missing a jacket, hoodie, or lunchbox?  It could be on our lost and found wall--see pictures below!  Items not claimed by the end of next week will be donated.  PLEASE remember to write your child's name inside their jackets and lunchboxes.

PTA Fall Festival
When: Saturday, October 7th
Where: Clever Elementary Playground 5-7:30pm
What: Games, Prizes, Concessions, and More!
Movie to follow the festival...stay for a family event and enjoy popcorn and hot coco!

Language Workshop
We continued learning about nouns and learned how to count syllables in a word by clapping out the sounds we here. We read “The Biggest Pumpkin EVER” and Perfect Pumpkins.  We learned how to make predictions while reading and the differences and similarities between a fiction and nonfiction text.
Math Workshop
This week we continued our module on Sums and Differences to 10. We focused on solving story problems. The students practiced reading the story, drawing a picture to match and writing the number sentence to find the missing part.
Writing Workshop
This week we started our first unit on narrative writing.  We learned to prewrite and use our writing binders to keep organized.
Word Study
Group A continued working on words that start with the “wh” and “th” sound.
Group B worked on the the “-en”, “-et”and “-eg” word families.
Next Week
In writing, we will continue to learn how to write an opinion piece. We will also keep working on our first module for math, Sums and Differences to 10. In language we will be learning about pronouns. In reading we will be learning about fairy tales with characters, setting, problems and solutions.
